A Message from Our Pastor

Sunday, March 7, 2010
The Third Sunday of Lent

The first reading recounts how Moses encounters God. In the desert Moses is invited to come close to a bush which, though it is on fire, is not consumed by the fire. God speaks to Moses from the bush, introducing Himself by the descriptive term I AM which means God has neither beginning nor end. God is!

This burning bush is an apt metaphor for God. There is light and heat, but the bush is neither consumed nor exhausted by flames. God lights our way in the world. The heat of His love  ignites the covenant of love which is at the basis of our relationship with God.

The gospel spells out some further characteristics of our covenant with God. Though we commit sin, the Lord allows us additional opportunities in which we can come to our senses and repent. This parable pretty well describes our present status in God’s plan. We are not to conclude that all is well if our worldly ways have not been challenged by God. Now is the time to come to our senses - “if you do not repent, you will all perish.”

PARISH RECONCILIATION
The annual parish
Reconciliation service is scheduled for Tuesday, March 16, beginning at 7:00 p.m. Additional priests will be on hand to hear confessions. We are all sinners; therefore, opportunities such as this provide us with the chance to straighten out our lives and renew our covenant with God.

- Msgr. Edward J. Sudekum

40 DAYS FOR LIFE
Our parish has adopted Wednesday, March 10, from 7:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. as our day to participate in the “40 Days for Life” Program in St. Louis. We will join with parishioners from St. Joseph Church (Clayton) to pray peacefully outside the Planned Parenthood Clinic on Forest Park Parkway. For further information please pick up a brochure in the Cloister Walk, or go to www.40DaysForLife.com/StLouis.

OLOL SCHOOL TUITION
2010-2011

The OLOL School Board has recommended, and the Finance Committee has approved, a new 2010-2011 schedule of tuition rates for families with students in OLOL School.

1 child $ 4,800
2 children $ 8,600
3 children $11,150
4+children $12,600
Out of Parish per child $ 6,100

We are able to set rates at this level because of the efforts of individuals and families involved in our fundraising activities. Overall, some $200,729 was raised this past year through contributions to the Annual School Appeal letter, Parish School Support (monthly packet blue envelope), the Fall Fundraising event and contributions from other parish organizations. In addition to these funds an additional parish subsidy (probably $200,000) will be forthcoming as we reach the conclusion of the 2009-2010 school year. We are grateful to all who have contributed so much time, talent and treasure to the success of OLOL School.

In addition, please know that financial assistance is available for any family needing this help who have children attending OLOL School. Please call Msgr. Sudekum so the 2010-2011 budget can be prepared more closely.

Archdiocesan Lenten Regulations

Then to all Christ said, "Whoever wishes to be my follower must deny his very self, take up his  cross each day, and follow in my steps"
(Lk 9:23).

The Church has always helped us fulfill these words of Jesus by prescribing very definite penance for all Catholics. Accordingly, the Pope and the American bishops have outlined obligatory fast and abstinence as follows:

Ash Wednesday (February 17, 2010) and Good Friday (April 2, 2010) are days of abstinence for all Catholics over the age of 14.  On these two days, fast as well as abstinence is also obligatory for those from the ages of 18 to 59.  Abstinence means abstinence from meat. Fast means one full meal a day, with two smaller meals and nothing between meals (liquids are permitted). No Catholic will lightly excuse himself or herself from this obligation.

All other Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence from meat. Here again Catholics will not hold themselves lightly excused, but if there is a serious health problem, this obligation would not apply.

We should strive to make all day of Lent a time of prayer and penance.
